Verdict: As a trainer, the ZoomFly 5 is a fail due to excessive weight.
Trying to accelerate in these shoes is akin to getting an 18-wheeler with a full load to pick up the pace. If there is any effect, it is undoubtedly dampened by the weight of the shoes. That being said, you will not get any sensation of forward propulsion or impressive Zoom X foam energy return.
It is certainly an improvement over the React foam sole. The ride is smooth, stable, cushioned and generally enjoyable provided you are going at a steady and relatively easy pace. On the run: I ran two 10 mile runs in this shoe. With the weight of the shoe and the sole consisting of a monstrous foam encapsulation used to retain Zoom X scraps, my first thought was, 'this is the shoe version of the car that Homer Simpson designed'.įit and feel: The shoe is a comfortable fit, but sadly Nike had to take a step backwards with the upper and go with a detached (and overly cushioned) tongue as opposed to the integrated tongue used in v4. (I should point out- that is the average weight of my pair - one shoe weighs 10.75 oz and the other weighs 11.25 oz - really, Nike?). Nike has incrementally increased the weight on this shoe (at least since v2) and now it's a bloated 11 oz for men's size 10. Taking the v5 out of the box for the first time, you will be shocked at how heavy it is. But sadly, this shoe lost it's way in version 3 and is now so far off track that I will have to give up on it for good. Disappointed.Again I have tried every version of the ZoomFly, always hoping that it would eventually become a suitable marathon training partner to go with the VaporFly.
